1998 - 1999

When the Ministry was newly established in 1998, we were given the task of developing a new website that incorporates the latest technology for the Ministry. To suit the name of the Ministry which is The Ministry of Energy, Communications and Multimedia', we needed to reflect the Ministry as a body that is up-to-date with information technology and at that time it was somewhat important to portray and project the convergence of energy, communications and multimedia through the website. What we had come out with was a design that extensively incorporated Flash animation, with the colour green as the basis of the whole website. Back then, the design was really refreshing and out of the ordinary, compared to other government websites.

In the following year, the first national website design competition was held. The designs on the left was only online for the duration of two weeks since the ministry top officials thought KTKM web presence needs more flair to reflect their image as a dynamic ministry.

Winning the 1st place for government agencies category is critical as the Ministry represents the govenment in Information Technology. We were given a daunting mission of designing a website worthy of it. With a concept of a true 'electronic brochure', all design elements were concentrated on appealing and attracting the end user to the content through the combination of vibrant graphics and attractive copywriting. Added attention was given on luring the user to read through the complex and extensive content inside the multi-layered website without scaring them away with intricate information on the initial front pages of the website. The judges were impressed and the rest was history.

As rapid development of world wide web users progresses, we were asked to revamp the website to accomodate the growing number of web surfers and bandwith bottlenecks. The new design must have smaller file sizes for faster download with small bandwith users in mind. Since the new website was planned to be built entirely on a dynamic web engine (ASP), the design needed to be flexible enough to be a template for data created and published on-the-fly. All these were translated into a new website design that could be downloaded lightning fast, with numorous visual navigational cues for user and at the same time is still nice to look at.

As requested by the website committee of the Ministry, the website was revamped again to include more visuals and content highlights. The need arise as users sophistication in digesting content heightened and their bandwidth capability increased. The layout concept became more modular and structured as the end users of the website were mostly industry players who demanded professional looking website that are not too flashy. Milder colour tones had set up the mood of the website to reflect the seriousness of the content and the Ministry as a governing body.

2003 - 2005

Following contemporary trends of websites that are shaped by more and more sophisticated end users, the website was revamped again. This time, bringing out the core content hidden deep inside the website database was the thing. By adapting the workings of a conventional newspaper, important news and contents were pushed to the front page, making the whole website more transparent to end users. With the combination of insightful layout structure and intelligent web engine, more relevant content could be brought forward to the front page, based on the current news or hot topics.
