RE Industry and Market Development

The Government has drafted several programmes to develop the renewable energy industry and market, including coordinating the relationship between R&D and RE commercialisation, proposal to create a fund for grants and soft loans for RE projects as well as establishing an RE certification system. Other programmes have been drafted to attract and support the development of an RE equipment production industry to ensure a supply of RE equipment at reasonable prices, conducting awareness and education programmes to consumers and encouraging demo/pioneer projects.

In the 2006 the CETREE successfully developed local solar cell technology with IRPA funding from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). The Ministry is working to expand this into a pilot project to enable the country is able to produce solar cells that are affordable to local consumers while creating a local solar cell industry.

The Government has also introduced renewable energy as a subject in the curriculum of primary and secondary schools, as well as at the university and professional levels (architecture/construction), where at least one teacher per school has been trained to teach RE and EE (energy efficiency). The programme involves 1,800 secondary and 8,000 primary schools throughout the country which have been provided with a teacher trained in RE. This is an effort to build basic knowledge on RE and foster an accepting attitude towards the technology among the younger generation of consumers.

In addition, there are the Biogen and MBIPV (Malaysia building integrated photovoltaic) projects, two (2) RE projects that are jointly funded by the Malaysia Government, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the industry. These demonstration projects are actively being implemented to promote the use of RE as green energy in this country.
